Easy snack recipe: trail mix

I love to snack. Most people I know love to snack. Snacking is important for maintaining sugar levels throughout the day and helps prevent us from binging at each meal (it’s even endorsed by the Biggest Loser!). For me, the most fun part about snacking is the variety of snacks that are available. Sure, there are lots of store bought snacks but then you’re limited to whatever is in the grocery store. When you make your own, you can adjust the ingredients to your own tastes and preferences, have more control over portion size and when you use your imagination, the possibilities for snacks are endless.

One of my family’s favorite snacks is trail mix. It combines salt, sweet, crunchy, chewy…it’s a flavor explosion! Plus, it’s easy to make, easy to travel with (stick it in your backpack or purse and go) and goes great with flavored water or tea.

Trail mix:


  • Assortment of nuts: almonds, peanuts, cashews (this can usually be bought together in some sort of party mix container)
  • Dried fruit such as cranberries, pineapple, bananas, cherries, apricots
  • Chocolate: chocolate chips or m&ms, or if you prefer peanut butter like peanut butter chips or Reese’s Pieces (you can also do a combination of both)


  1. Take handfuls, or the entire package, of each and dump it all into a bowl
  2. Measure out 1/4-1/3 cup
  3. Put in a plastic baggie or reusable containter of the appropriate size (the 1/2 cup size ones are perfect)
